Instant Star has been a popular teen favorite the past few seasons. Fans of the show will be pleased with the DVD release of the first season. The season one DVD includes the first 13 episodes of the show. The downside is that season one aired so long ago these episodes seem like light years ago. It would have been good if they would have released the first and second season together on DVD.

The first season chronicles Jude’s semi rise to stardom. After winning the Instant Star competition she receives a record contract with G Major Records. Her producer is “Little Tommy Q,” who used to be in a boy band named Boyz Attack. Tommy is all grown up now and he is her producer who she has a crush on it seems. Adding to the story is her close relationship with her male childhood best friend Jamie. At this time in the series, Jude is still in high school and living with her parents who are still married. Her sister Sadie is a little older than her but they attend the same school.

The first season is primarily about her recording songs for G Major and dealing with various unexpected trappings of sudden fame. First she has conflict with a fellow recording artist named Eden. Then she finds love with a rapper named Shay. Things really heat up when her and her producer Tommy share an unexpected kiss on Jude’s 16th birthday. It’s all not a smooth ride as she also has to deal with her parents crumbling marriage.

Instant Star is a television series packed with drama. It’s a series that teens and adults will find intriguing and it was created by the same people who created the series Degrassi The Next Generation. Bonus features includes deleted scenes, bloopers, cast auditions, music performances and more.

Instant Star is a Canadian television program starring Alexz Johnson as an adolescent music competition winner; she plays Jude Harrison. After its release, the program’s popularity rose amongst teenagers, particularly in the United States and Canada.

The show chronicles Harrison’s experience in the recording industry whilst focusing upon character development. In each episode of the show, Jude Harrison must deal with the problems and challenges of both her musical career and her personal life, as one weaves into the other.

In season 1, she faces dilemmas and choices in her relationships, dividing her feelings between the loves in her life, such as Tommy Q. (her producer/soul mate, who is played by the dreamy Tim Rozon), Jamie (a life-long best friend who is played by the charming Kristopher Turner ), and Shay (a major rap artist/ex boyfriend), while also recording with G-Major Records.

These people are important to her music – the one thread that ties her life together. Her best moments are when she is working with others in creating and performing her music. In addition to her music and her loves, there is a lot more going on in her personal life and in the lives of those around her.

Each episode of the series features a new song performed by Jude. Usually, the song is about something that occurs in the episode. However, in some episodes there are no direct explanation to the lyrics. Some episodes can feature more than one song, but there is only one song per episode that is to be featured on the soundtrack for that particular season. For instance, there are 13 episodes per season, therefore there are 13 main songs.

Alexz Johnson has done the vocals for Jude on both soundtracks that has been realesed so far, while even co-writing some of the songs with her brother Brendan.

Route 66 underwent many improvements and realignments…most of those affected the total mileage somewhat…one of those resulted in the movement of the endpoint from Los Angeles to Santa Monica. Contrary to common belief, Route 66 never ran to the ocean; it terminated onto what was then US-101, at the intersection of what is today Lincoln Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard.

In the 1950s, Route 66 became the main highway for vacationers heading to Los Angeles…the road passed through the Painted Desert and near the Grand Canyon. Meteor Crater in Arizona was another popular stop…this sharp rise in tourism in turn gave rise to a burgeoning trade in all manner of roadside attractions including teepee shaped motels, frozen custard stands, Indian curio shops, and reptile farms. Meramec Caverns near St. Louis began advertising on barns, billing itself as the “Jesse James hideout”…The Big Texan advertised a free 72 ounce steak dinner to anyone who could eat the whole thing in an hour…it also marked the birth of the fast-food industry: “Red’s Giant Hamburgs” in Springfield, Missouri, site of the first drive through restaurant, and the first McDonald’s in San Bernardino, California. Changes like these to the landscape further cemented 66’s reputation as a near perfect microcosm of the culture of America, now linked by the automobile . . . . . what this collections gives the viewer, is a feeling that you’ve been there…and that my friend is the whole point.

Over the years, U.S. Route 66 received many nicknames, they are as follows:

1. The Great Diagonal Way–Right after Route 66 was commissioned, it received

this nickname because a large section of the highway (Chicago to Oklahoma City)

ran diagonally, unlike the other highways.

2. The Main Street of America–Advertised as such by the US Highway 66 Association

to promote the highway. The title had also been claimed by supporters of U.S. Route 40,

but the Route 66 group was more successful.

3. The Mother Road–Called this by John Steinbeck in “The Grapes of Wrath”, the title

continued to be applied to the highway.

4. The Will Rogers Highway– “officially” named this by the US Highway 66 Association

in 1952. A plaque dedicating the highway to the humorist is still located opposite the western

terminus of Route 66 in Santa Monica, California. There were more plaques like this; one can

be found in Galena, Kansas. It was originally located on the Kansas-Missouri state line, but

moved to the Howard Litch Memorial Park in 2001.

OK, here we have 3 DVDs ca. 1994, 1995 and 2000. They are full of historical information, nostalgia and local color. Makes you want to load up the old station wagon and hit the (Mother) road. They are all well organized, East to West, and vary in content enough to be a great value at $17.99 to someone with an interest in such things.

Disc One is a fine ride. Disc Two rolls along nicely as well until you cross into California and then the ambush. At this point we are ushered into an admitted side trip detour to “the most intriguing of the new museums”, an alternate venue called Exotic World. Here we are given a “brief” tour through a burlesque museum complete with some old B&W photos of bare breasted strippers of days gone by. The tour is hosted by a remnant of the bygone era in an outfit that shows way too much geriatric real estate.

Disc Three is pretty much the same deal with the addition of some live shots of a striptease pageant “for those staunch road warriors lucky enough to be traveling this way in the first weekend in………”. Yeah right.

Mr. Wallis is obviously a very smart and talented man and I’m sure that in the name of artistic license it would be perfectly permissible to include such things in a documentary of of the History of Hedonism. But in this case these excerpts represent no positive addition to the presentation and are nothing more than a couple of piles of cow plop in the middle of the Mother Road.

I guess my main complaint that for us “non-staunch road warriors” there was no reference to this material anywhere on the DVDs or packaging. One might quip, “There’s nothing worse than you see on TV.” Well I don’t watch it either, because I know what to expect. Watch you step!

Get Hollow Man – The Director’s Cut [Blu-ray] Online Right Now!

In Paul Verhoeven’s appropriately shallow Hollow Man, Kevin Bacon plays a bad-boy egotistical scientist who heads up a double-secret government team experimenting with turning life-forms invisible. How do we know he’s a bad boy? Because he (a) wears a leather overcoat, (b) compares himself to God, (c) drives a sports car, and (d) spies on his comely next-door neighbor while eating Twinkies. Sadly, this is the most character development anyone gets in this undernourished action/sci-fi thriller, which boasts some amazing special effects and some amazingly ridiculous plot twists. After experimenting rather ruthlessly on a menagerie of lab animals, Bacon finally cracks the code that will turn the invisible gorillas, dogs, and so on, back into their visible forms. Does it work on humans? Faster than you can say “six degrees,” Mr. Bacon appoints himself human guinea pig, strapping down for an injection of fluorescent-colored serum. Thanks to some phenomenal, seamless and Oscar-worthy computer effects, Bacon is indeed rendered invisible, organ by organ, vein by vein. And what’s the first thing you’d do if you were invisible? Why, spy on your female coworkers in the bathroom and molest your comely next-door neighbor, of course! Soon, Bacon is thoroughly psychotic, and it’s up to Elisabeth Shu (Bacon’s coworker and ex-girlfriend) and hunky Josh Brolin (her current snuggle bunny) to defeat the invisible man, who’s picking off the science team one by one. You’d think this would be a prime opportunity for copious amounts of cheesy sex and aggressive violence–which Verhoeven served up so well and so exuberantly in Starship Troopers and Basic Instinct–but if anything, the director seems to tone down the proceedings, and really, who wants a muted Paul Verhoeven movie? Shu (who got top billing and a bad haircut to boot) and Brolin (who, yes, does take off his shirt at least once) generate little heat, and while Bacon does give an effective, primarily voice-oriented performance, his character is so underdeveloped that, well, you can see right through him. –Mark Englehart

This early Mike Leigh film was made for British television in 1983 (released theatrically in 1985), and introduced both Gary Oldman and Tim Roth. Set in the Thatcher era, the story–typically for Leigh–is more a matter of dramatic evolution than a conventionally realized script. The action revolves around a middle-class family whose male members are all on the government dole, and whose matriarch (Marion Bailey) is long-suffering in the sight of her two sons, one a half-wit (Roth) and the other a cynical bum (Phil Daniels). Oldman plays the latter’s skinhead pal, mostly a goof with no future, and Alfred Molina portrays a relative of the brothers strongly resistant to nudging their lives in a more constructive direction. The story, such as it is, is actually a series of discrete, deceptively unambitious, and highly entertaining scenes that could just as easily stand on their own as belong to some greater whole. Leigh, not quite fully baked as a filmmaker in the early 1980s, occasionally engages a rather obvious wit, such as shooting a long take in a laundry room from an angle that favors the sight of a washing machine and ignores the characters from the waist up. The remarkable actors, however, are as deeply immersed in their roles as in any of Leigh’s work, and the film is ultimately as moving and funny as one expects from this uniqu director. –Tom Keogh
